By the way, who are resellers?
Answers to Research Questions Pt. 1 (Rina and Kaho)
Q1: Who are resellers?
A1: According to the Cambridge Dictionary, reseller means the people or the company selling the product to someone else. On the other hand, illegal resellers are basically the ones who sells a product higher than the original price. They mostly use platforms that sellers and buyers trade directly.
Q8: Are there a translation for the word 「転売ヤー」in other languages?
A8: The word itself a coined word of 「転売」and「~屋」. Each word can be translated but most are conjugated in each word so there is no word-for-word translation for 「転売ヤー」.
Q9: What is the borderline or the restrictions for the resellers?
A9: Reselling at a proper price or using second-hand stores are good resell. Reselling that buys products only for reselling is bad. There are no exact restrictions on reselling.
Q11: How do resellers make profit?
A11: They make profits by selling items in high prices. However, some platforms have selling fee and postage. That makes resellers hard to make profit. When the products are left unsold, it's a deficit.
Selling fee Examples (as for 6/2/25):
- eBay, free up to 250 lists a month
- Mercari, 10% of price ex:10% of 300yen=30 yen
- Yahoo Fela Market, 5% of price, but free for first time
- Yahoo Auction, 10% of price
Q15: What kinds of products do resellers sell?
A15: They tend to sell limited goods or expensive products. Like the Chiikawa goods were limited edition, Nintendo Switch 2 is an expensive product.

返信削除This topic is really interesting, especially since reselling has become such a common thing in our daily lives, especially online. I was surprised that there’s not really a clear legal line between acceptable reselling and what’s considered exploitative. Also, the idea that resellers can actually end up with a loss if items don’t sell or platform fees add up makes it more complicated than it seems. I also found it cool how the word 「転売ヤー」is a unique Japanese coined term that doesn’t translate exactly into English. It really shows how cultural and language differences can shape how we talk about modern trends like this.
